After school, Audra sat with her elbows propped on her desk and her face in her hands. This day was absolutely incredible. Odd little bits and pieces of it drifted through her memory—the surprised look on students’ faces, the one-sided talk with Heather, the long look from Dann. She sighed. Somehow, I have to tell him I’m a candidate for cancer surgery. I just have to—but, well, not today.

Knuckles rapped on her door, and Dann stuck his head in. “Busy?”

“Come on in.” She straightened in her seat and ran her hands through her hair. “So, how do you feel the day went overall?”

“Successful. So successful, in fact, I just had to come and tell you Sheldon was quite impressed. Did you know he stayed through two whole performances—the concert band in the morning and concert orchestra this afternoon? He was standing behind you.”

“No, actually, I didn’t. What did he say?”

“He was there to check how well the students were reacting. He said he was gratified by their responses, and oh yeah, he liked our playing, too.” Dann shoved his hands into his pockets. “I’d like to take you out to dinner this evening to express my gratitude—and no fast food.”

Almost getting used to the little flushes of warmth he triggered, she smiled up at him. “I would enjoy that—but all of a sudden, I’m exhausted. I’m going home to take a catnap before my music lesson arrives. I’ll be ready any time after five thirty. Some place quiet?”
